But Not for the Reason Anyone Expected

Turns out the most powerful thing about the Italian passeggiata, the evening stroll that Italian communities have practiced for generations, has less to do with the walking than anyone assumed.

In the 1960s, researchers discovered that the Italian immigrant community of Roseto, Pennsylvania, was barely having heart attacks. Half the national rate for people over 65. In men under 55, there were zero recorded deaths from heart attacks. None. They spent years looking for the explanation in diet, genetics, and geography. None of it held up. Italian immigrants from the same region who had settled elsewhere in the US had perfectly ordinary heart disease rates.

What set Roseto apart was social cohesion. Multigenerational households. Neighbors who functioned as extended family. And every evening, people stepping outside to walk together. When Roseto gradually adopted more individualistic American lifestyles, heart disease rates rose to match those of surrounding towns. The researchers had predicted exactly this.

The passeggiata was never really about burning calories. It was about belonging. Scientists now call what the Rosetans had the “Roseto Effect.” The rest of us might just call it what it is: one of the oldest medicines there is.
