Turns Out Chamomile Did the Work and Apigenin Took the Bow
By Mark J Kaylor
Turns out the flower in your bedtime mug has earned its reputation, and the molecule getting all the credit hasn’t.
A 2024 analysis of ten clinical trials with 772 adults found that Chamomile meaningfully improved sleep quality. Its clearest effect was on staying asleep, with fewer middle-of-the-night wake-ups, and it made falling asleep easier in most trials that measured it. Total sleep time didn’t change, and results varied quite a bit from study to study, so think of Chamomile as a gentle ally rather than a knockout punch.
Here’s the twist. Apigenin, a Chamomile flavonoid, binds gently to the same brain receptors that anti-anxiety medications target. It has become a supplement star in its own right, often sold at 50 mg a night. Yet no published controlled trial has tested isolated apigenin for sleep. Every human result so far comes from the whole flower, where apigenin works alongside luteolin, bisabolol, and dozens of other compounds.
Herbalists have relied on Chamomile as a gentle nervine for centuries, especially for the restless and overwrought. The research is catching up to the cup, not the capsule.
Sometimes the plant was the point all along.
