Turns Out Cleaning Your Blood Cleans Out More Than Cholesterol
By Mark J Kaylor
Turns out, the machine doctors use to strip dangerous cholesterol from the sickest patients’ blood may be doing something nobody asked it to do: hauling out forever chemicals too.
German researchers ran blood from 34 patients through a filtering treatment called apheresis, originally designed for people whose cholesterol doesn’t respond to other treatments. They checked blood before and after. PFAS, the so-called forever chemicals found in nonstick pans and stain-proof fabric, dropped by as much as 75.8 percent for some compounds. Microplastics may have dropped too, though that evidence is earlier and softer.
Nobody built this machine to do that. It was designed to catch fat particles, not synthetic chemicals shaped nothing like them.
This is not a green light for a spa day cholesterol flush. It’s a small, early study, not proof that your body’s total chemical burden went down or that anyone got healthier. The lead researcher’s own conclusion: preventing exposure still beats cleaning up after.
Turns out, some of medicine’s best discoveries aren’t the ones we go looking for.
